What Causes a Cold?
Colds are caused by viruses, with rhinoviruses being the most common. They spread easily in the community through:
- Airborne droplets when someone coughs, sneezes, or talks
- Touching contaminated surfaces and then touching your eyes, nose, or mouth
- Close contact with an infected person
Because cold viruses can survive on surfaces for several hours, handwashing and good hygiene are key to prevention. Click here to learn more about the illnesses we treat at our urgent care locations.
Common Cold Symptoms
Cold symptoms typically appear one to three days after exposure and may include:
- Stuffy or runny nose
- Sneezing
- Sore throat
- Cough
- Congestion
- Watery eyes
- Mild body aches or headaches
- Fatigue
- Low-grade fever
Most people recover in 7 to 10 days, but some symptoms can persist or worsen without care.
Stages of a Cold
Colds usually follow a predictable pattern:
- Incubation Period: Lasts 1 to 3 days after exposure before symptoms begin – you may still be contagious.
- Peak Symptom Phase: Between days 2 and 4, symptoms like congestion, cough, and fatigue are at their worst.
- Recovery Phase: Most people feel better within 7 to 10 days, though a cough or fatigue can last longer.
Cold Treatments and Remedies
There is no cure for the common cold, but treatment focuses on easing symptoms and helping you feel better.
At-home remedies include:
- Rest and hydration
- Warm fluids like tea or broth
- Humidifiers or steamy showers
- Gargling with salt water for a sore throat
Over-the-counter medications may also help:
- Decongestants for nasal pressure
- Pain relievers like acetaminophen or ibuprofen
- Cough suppressants or expectorants, depending on your symptoms
Our providers can help you decide which treatments are right for you.
When to Seek Urgent Care for a Cold
Most colds improve on their own, but medical attention may be needed if you experience:
- Symptoms lasting longer than 10 days
- High fever over 100.4° F
- Severe sinus pain or pressure
- Shortness of breath or chest discomfort
- Ear pain or persistent cough
- Signs of dehydration
- A weakened immune system or chronic condition that raises complication risks
Prompt evaluation can rule out more serious conditions like sinus infections, bronchitis, or pneumonia.
