What Is the Flu / Influenza ?
The flu, or influenza, is a contagious infection caused by influenza viruses. Unlike the common cold, the flu often comes on suddenly with fever, chills, and body aches. While many people recover within a week, flu symptoms can be severe and sometimes result in serious complications—especially for young children, older adults, and those with chronic health conditions. How the Flu Spreads
The flu spreads easily in the community, especially during flu season (typically October through March). You can catch the flu by:
Breathing in droplets from someone coughing, sneezing, or talking.
Touching contaminated surfaces and then touching your eyes, nose, or mouth.
Close contact with an infected person.
Types of Flu / Influenza
There are several different influenza viruses that affect humans:
Influenza A: The most common and severe strain, often linked to widespread outbreaks.
Influenza B: Typically causes seasonal flu, especially in children and teens.
Influenza C: Rare and usually results in mild symptoms.
Common Flu Symptoms
Flu symptoms often appear suddenly and affect the entire body. You may experience:
Fever and chills
Cough
Sore throat
Runny or congested nose
Body or muscle aches
Headache
Fatigue or weakness
While most people recover in 5–7 days, fatigue or cough may last up to two weeks.
When to Seek Urgent Care for the Flu
It’s important to get medical attention if flu symptoms are severe or not improving. Visit Urgent Medical Center if you have:
High fever lasting more than three days
Shortness of breath, wheezing, or chest discomfort
Severe body aches or exhaustion
Vomiting or signs of dehydration
Symptoms that improve and then suddenly return worse
Prompt treatment can ease symptoms and help prevent complications such as pneumonia, bronchitis, or hospitalization.
Protect Yourself with a Flu Shot
The best way to prevent the flu is with an annual flu shot. Vaccination is recommended every year because both the virus and your immune system change over time. Getting vaccinated not only protects you but also helps reduce the spread of flu in the community.
Walk in to Urgent Medical Center during flu season to get your flu shot—fast, convenient, and often covered by insurance.
