Certified Medical Examiner

Medical Examiners are a qualified public officers whose duty is to investigate deaths that occur under unusual or suspicious circumstances, to perform post mortems and to initiate inquests. As a Government official their role includes but is not limited to:

•  Investigating Human Death
• Determining Cause of Death
• Issues and Maintains Death Records
• Identifies Unknown Dead.
• Additional Functions Depending on Local Law

As a new Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) program, the National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners (National Registry) is requiring all Medical Examiners who perform driver medical exams to full understand the medical standards of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSRs) plus all related guidance. As part of the requirements, medical examiners are now required to participate in training, pass the certification test, and register on the National Registry system, allowing them to become a certified medical examiner. This new requirement will become mandatory in May of 2014

In the process to become a Certified Medical Examiner, you must be in accordance with the following criteria:

• Be registered on the National Registry System and have received a unique identifier.
• Hold a License, certification, or be registered in accordance with all applicable State laws and regulations allowing you to perform physical examinations.
• Complete the required training and pass the Certification Test to become a Medical Examiner.
• Submit monitoring and audits on a periodic basis.
• Maintain certification by completing training every 5 years
• Recertify every 10 years by passing the Medication Examiner Certification exam.
• Report on driver exams every month via the National Registry System

It is imperative to receive the proper training when looking to become a Medical Examiner. Finding an organization that meets the particular requirements needed for the thorough training of a Medical Examiner is crucial to ensure you get the correct training. When looking for organizations that provide the training you need, it will be important to ensure they are meeting these requirements:

• Provides the trainees proof of participation
• The core curriculum, established by FMCSA with specifications for Medical Examiner Training, is being met
• A nationally recognized medical professions accrediting organization have awarded accreditation to them.
• Provides point of contact information to FMCSA for all trainees participating.

Now that you have taken the training and are meeting all regulations, it will be time to test. You will want to locate a test delivery organization, one that has been approved by FMCSA. There are a few things to keep in mind, such as:

• Be sure to take your a photo ID, license or medical credentials, along with your training certificate, as the test delivery organization will require this information to take the test.
• There are test delivery organizations that offer the test online or remote testing options.
• Once you pass the test you will receive a FMCSA Medical Examiner certification credential that is valid for up to 10 years.
